After reading Supreme Court Justice Scalia’s claim that “the Establishment Clause ... permits the disregard of devout atheists,” Mike Newdow looked deeply into the nation’s history to determine whether or not this conclusion is reasonable. What exactly, he wanted to know, were the religious prejudices of the founding era?
After more than two years of intensive research, he has determined that – whatever their prejudices – the Framers of our Constitution definitely had equality in mind for all lawful religious views. But, if societal animosity was to color this ideal, it wasn’t that aimed at Atheists. No, the religion that was despised in 18th century America was that of Justice Scalia (and four other current Supreme Court justices): Catholicism!
Newdow has now produced an educational, entertaining and inspiring 3-CD set to counter Justice Scalia’s arguments. Interlacing historical narratives with the music of West Side Story, WASP Side Story has been created, with new lyrics explaining how the founding era’s literal hatred of Catholics was overcome by the Framers’ devotion to religious equality.
