Whereas the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America
exists to unite the citizens of the Nation in a patriotic exercise, and
Whereas the Flag to which the Pledge is directed symbolizes the foundations of
the Nation's greatness, and
Whereas the Constitution of the United States is the ultimate foundation of
that greatness, and
Whereas the Bill of Rights with its First Amendment is among the most revered
portions of the Constitution, and
Whereas the first ten words of the First Amendment are "Congress shall make no
law respecting an establishment of religion," and
Whereas the inclusion of the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance
establishes theism as the Nation's religion in direct violation of that
Establishment Clause, and
Whereas those words denigrate the religious beliefs of the millions of
Americans who do not adhere to theism, and
Whereas this differential effect based on religious belief impairs the unity
the Pledge is meant to engender,
We, the undersigned, hereby declare our opposition to the continued inclusion
of the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance and demand that the
Pledge be returned to its original form: "... one Nation indivisible, with liberty
and justice for all." |
